Have you heard about Balayam where simply by nail rubbing your hair grows faster and healthier?

Well, last night, while going through your hair queries, I found this one.

nail rubbing benefits for hair growth

It was an interesting one.

I have received this query time and again. Thought it’s a good time to talk about it.

Let me just start by explaining nail rubbing method in brief.

What Exactly Is Nail Rubbing Method?

Nail rubbing is an acupressure therapy that is also known as Balayam yoga.

Why Balayam? Because Bal means hair and Vyayam means Exercise. So, it is basically an exercise that helps your hair become healthy from within.

It is claimed that it helps in increasing hair growth naturally and works by simply rubbing your fingernails against each other. People believe this form of yoga provides effective treatment to your hair and scalp’s health.

It is mostly recommended by many health practitioners and yoga culture believers. As hair loss and baldness is very common these days, nail rubbing techniques have been claimed to have worked for most of them.

One of the strongest selling points of nail rubbing is that it does not have any side effects. Plus, it doesn’t cost you a dime.

How To Do The Nail Rubbing Method The Right Way?

In order to do it, fold your hands gently towards each other and get them close. Just make sure your adjacent fingernails touch each other so that the rubbing technique is effective. Rub your nails against each other for at least five minutes in order to uncover better results. You need to rub all the nails except for your thumb and this should be done at least two to three times a day.

WORD OF CAUTION: It is not good to perform this yoga for about 2-3 times a day for more than ten minutes per sitting.

Advantages of Nail Rubbing For Hair Growth

There are multiple nail rubbing benefits that people claim. First off, rubbing of the nails help in preventing excessive hair loss. It provides a natural healthy look to your hair and it promotes natural hair growth.

Balayam also improves blood circulation in the brain and strengthens the roots of the hair. There are claims that it also prevents greying of hair and it helps in regrowing hair on bald spots.

Why Nail Rubbing Works: The Science Behind it

Science in Reflexology: Reflexology is a scientific technique that involves the application of pressure to parts or areas of the body to heal various conditions. It works directly on the central nervous system. This technique is mostly applied on hands and feet, ears etc. Apart from the obvious advantages of calming the nervous system, it also reduces stress and improves your mood.

As the nerve endings in the nails are directly connected to the hair follicles of the scalp, this explains how the method increases blood circulation in your scalp, which in turn strengthens the hair follicles. As a result, it helps in reducing hair fall and greying of hair.

Stem Cells: Stem cells are important cells of the body that are responsible for the damage and repair of various tissues and organs. Hair follicles also have adult stem cells which actually help in hair growth. Rubbing of fingernails signals the adult stem cells to clear the damage in the hair follicles and repair them. Because of the ability of this stem cell to renew itself, it produces new hair follicles at the damaged part of the scalp.

Things Not To Do

Balayam causes a little drowsiness. So it is preferable to avoid rubbing nails during work hours. Rubbing thumbs may increase facial hair like beard and mustache.

Also, both hands need to rub uniformly, else there are chances of growing hair on the ears.

It is not advisable to practice this technique when you are pregnant.

People with high blood pressure should not perform this technique either.

It is also not advisable to perform Balayam yoga if the person has appendicitis or any other severe health conditions.

My Experience With Balayam

Since I was a little kid, my mom made me do it and I have had a good thick hair. Still do.

But I eventually just stopped and forgot about it.

After starting this hair blog, a lot of you reached out to me time and again to try it and whether or not it works. So I have been doing it for about a year now(more or less regularly) and I have seen faster hair growth. I am constantly using so many hair masks along with it too, so can’t confirm whether it’s because of balayam or not.

Also, I still have grey hair and I haven’t seen any difference in them turning black because of balayam. So, that is something I can confirm that it doesn’t reverse grey hair. That is why I use my diy hair oil to cover my greys naturally.

Although I strongly feel that it helps with hair loss and hair regrowth. It is a long Indian hair secret that my mom shared with me.

So if you are facing hair fall, and experiencing bald patches, it is better to grow healthy hair using a few tips like nail rubbing yoga instead of wearing artificial wigs.

There are multiple tried and tested home remedies that have been used in order to control hair fall and regrow lost hair, in case if you want to check it out. But since nail rubbing is free and takes only a couple of minutes of your day, it couldn’t hurt, right?

Hope you found this post helpful. See you soon with more such posts. Till then to see what’s on my testing table right now, you can follow me on my Instagram.
